Site News: Site Has Moved. There Will Be Issues
The site has moved to Prgmr.com, a virtual hosting service that I think will provide a little more elbow room, improve site speed, and stop the database crashes we've been experiencing.
That said, I fully expect there will be issues I haven't prepared for, and I expect we'll find them in the days and weeks going forward. Bear with me.
Site News: Site Must Move, Soon
Not two days after I started posting the webcount widgets of NaNoWriMo participants, and it's a big black bar on my screen. The site is slow, and I get a lot of server errors, database errors, timeouts...
DreamHost has been a fine provider, but they're not really equipped to give me the dedicated resources I need now that I've resumed publishing and my audience is stopping by more often. They've already told me that I'm pushing the far end of what they can provide.
That means it is, in fact, time for the site to move to a service with more elbow room. The good news is that I can probably afford it to an extent. The bad news is that I'm not sure exactly when the actual move will be (because I am still trying to write 50,000 words by the end of the month, and because of a few other logistical challenges) so the site will have to limp around for a while until then.
Hopefully the NaNoWriMo widgets will come back...
Misc: Hey NaNoWriMo'ers! Your Word Count -- This Site. Read On.
If you look over to the right, just under the PayPal donation widget, you'll see a few NaNoWriMo widgets that are displaying active word counts. At present it's just me and my wife (yes, I roped my wife into doing NaNoWriMo this year -- muahahahahahaha) but I have room for more.
If you're a reader and you're doing NaNoWriMo this year, I'll be happy to add your wordcount widget as well. Just give me your permission (and send me a link to your author page so I can figure out your user number) and I'll add it. The widget changes once you cross 50,000, and for about a week in December I'll leave the winners up (whether I am one or not) so they can bask in victory.
Misc: State Of My Comics, End of October, 2009
It was mid-November last year that the Lovely Economy Of Wonder And Rapturous Joy (LEOWARJ) forced me to abandon my setup at SliceHost and announce that my site was going dark due to lack of funds. At that time you, my readers, rallied to my cause and donated money -- enough to keep Ubersoft.net up and running for a little while, long enough for one of you kind readers to offer to host the site until it could get back on its feet.
Because you were all willing to do that, Ubersoft.net did not go dark, and I was able to continue publishing -- but my publishing schedule was shot all to Hell due to various concerns like getting a job, getting money, paying bills, moving to a new state, and various other things that made comics-related activities difficult.
One year later things are much better... but they're still not what they were. Here's an update.
Misc: Old Skool Webcomic #20
Today Old Skool Webcomic published its twentieth strip. I know you are all well aware of what a huge milestone twenty comics is in the world of webcomics, so I wanted to share this very special moment with the rest of you.
It took me three years to get here. I look forward to getting to #40 in 2012 -- just before the world ends!
