Site News: A Very Special Announcement
At last the time has come to reveal to you all the future of this site.
I've spent the last fourteen years studying the webcomic community carefully, taking note of what works, what doesn't, and at last I am ready to transform this comic into a monetized, full-blown commercial product that will allow me to quit my day job and spend all my time raking in cash from the Internet.
Effective almost immediately, expect to see the following changes:
Site News: Help Desk Turns 14
On March 31, 1996 the web magazine OS/2 e-Zine! published a poorly-drawn clip art comic called "Help Desk." 14 years later I've studiously attempted to maintain those standards, and it remains a poorly-drawn clip art comic called "Help Desk."
The last few years have been difficult times for the comic. The Cartoonist's chaotic personal life has made updating difficult, economic woes have put continued publication in peril, and currently it's fighting against a design flaw that causes the database to crash the entire site, as well as the Cartoonist's severe lack of time to spend on updates due to a month-long crunch time that has required him to stay at the office till 11PM, and sometimes not bother going home at all. The lack of time is so severe that there isn't even a comic today, just this quick post briefly noting the milestone. This milestone is met with a whimper rather a roar, but it's here.
With luck, time, and the proper application of resources, hopefully the 15th anniversary will be more interesting.
Misc: Spam Blue Laws?
As I have mentioned repeatedly in the past this site has been getting hammered by blogspam. Every day it would be inundated by hundreds of bot-spawned posts trying to hawk their wares in an inappropriate manner.
But not yesterday.
Yesterday the only activity on the spam filter came from two posts from real people that were censored for no reason that I could see. But there was no actual blogspam.
Blogspam took Sunday off.
Misc: Troubleshooting The Site Crashes
Thursday the site crashed again. I'm pretty sure it's a mysql problem, which is unfortunate because I don't have enough experience with mysql to figure out how to prevent it from happening. However, after looking at my database after the last few crashes I found something interesting. Maybe one of my considerably-more-experienced readers can suggest some way to avoid this problem in the future? Read on.
Misc: Panic!
Those of you who follow me on Twitter know that I promised a new Kernel Panic comic this week. This was the very last day I could have made good on that promise (technically Saturday would be the very last, but when it comes to the comic I tend to think in blocks of Monday through Friday) but I did deliver. The real question is whether I can continue to deliver. I don't want Kernel Panic to be an "updated yearly" comic, it just seems to work out that way.
I am currently extremely busy at work, putting in long hours to write brilliant documentation for complex and arcane things, and that has choked the life out of the streak I started in January. Work ethic has never been a problem for me but time management certainly has.
In other news, on March 31 Help Desk will turn 14. Any thoughts on an appropriate way to celebrate this milestone?
