CUSTOMER: Hello, I'm trying to figure out when we can expect he first service update for Ubersoft Nifty Doorways Verandah. It was already delayed once, and --

ALEX: The service update has been rescheduled and will be released very soon.

CUSTOMER: It will? That's great news!

ALEX: It's probably a good idea to start archiving all your data now in preparation for the service update.

CUSTOMER: I'm really looking forward to -- wait. What?

ALEX: You should start archiving your data now. That way you won't have to do it before applying the patch.

CUSTOMER: But... but this is an update to fix problems, right? Why would I need to back up my files if all I'm doing is installing something to fix bugs?

(Silence.)

CUSTOMER: Hello?

ALEX: Thank you for calling Ubersoft, and have a nice day.

In my experience...

...this is good practice no matter what OS you're running. I had an issue with some lost data when installing the latest major update to Xubuntu.

I agree it's a good practice...

... I just don't understand why. I know that it is because I've suffered the consequences of not doing it in my foolish, foolish youth. But conceptually I have difficulty understanding how something designed to be a bug fix, a patch, etc. could wind up doing so much damage...

Phil

The answer is Phil. Phil is not just a fictional character, there are real Phils - lazy bastards who don't care about the end product, they just code to get paid, and some of them probably are drunk when they do it.

I actually got the idea of Phil...

... from a story my brother told me about some programmers who actually had a drinking game based on their work. Whoever broke the build had to take a drink.

I think I used that in the "Birth of Binky" story arc.

You know you code best when

You know you code best when your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is .1337, right?

Hah!

HemiRT I'd mod you up if I could. :)

Well, maybe you need to add

Well, maybe you need to add a mod addon to the comments module.

There's probably one somewhere.

I don't understand

In his own, mildly impersonally sadistic way, is Alex actually being helpful here??? Must have a lie down.

He does that sometimes.

But he only does it when it doesn't matter. :)

Interruption

I've had an upgrade cut out on me mid-install due to a power failure. Yes, it was on a backup battery, but a 10 minute UPS won't do much when you are 5 minutes into a 45 minute procedure that can't be cancelled.

When the power went out, the systems crashed, and we lost some of the data on the drives because of the partial upgrade.

Huh.

Well you've definitely got a point there. Even the most flawless, bug-free, feature-complete patch or upgrade can't save you from external forces, faulty hardware, and random unfortunate events.

I believe the answer has now been explained to my satisfaction. :)
