Webcomics Made Easy

Help Desk, by Christopher B. Wright

Comic Transcript

NARRATOR: How to draw: ALEX.

NARRATOR: Yes kids... today we're going to learn to draw ALEX from HELP DESK. By following these simple steps you can draw ALEX in almost exactly the same way as the CARTOONIST.

ALEX: What?

NARRATOR: STep one: Load a comic featuring Alex into your favorite photo-editing software. The Cartoonist uses the GIMP -- because it's free as in freedom AND as in beer!*

(Image of a Help Desk comic loaded into the GIMP.)

*Children under the age of 21 should not consume alcoholic beverages in the United States. Children over the age of 21 should not operate heavy machinery while under the influence of alcohol.

NARRATOR: Step two: Using the select tool, draw a rectangle around Alex.

(Close-up of comic, with a select field drawn around Alex sitting in a chair.)

NARRATOR: Step three: CUT and PASTE Alex into a BRAND NEW SCENE!

(Image of Alex sitting in a chair, pasted into a white field.)

NARRATOR: Step four: Add EMOTION!

ALEX: I'm shocked.

ALEX: For some reason that makes me sad.

ALEX: I am overcome with joy.

NARRATOR: There you go, kids! You're a webcartoonist now!

Pure gold!

This strip is pure gold, you're quite a genious, I always wondered how you drew Alex the same every time!

doesn't surprise me

It doesn't surprise me, and honestly it is a good style. Comics really should be about the punchline. (although, the repeat-expression seems to actually work well in this comic seeing how long Alex has worked for Ubersoft.)

yes but...

...how do you get the background colors to change?
;-)

No animals were harmed in the creation of this message. However, many electrons were incredibly inconvenienced.

Finally! I always wanted to

Finally! I always wanted to be just like Chris!

Being perfect...

Who wouldn't want to be just like him?

I thought you made this

I thought you made this comic with Inkscape.

Minor details!

I compose in Inkscape and process the png in the GIMP.

Yeah, right!

I am so glad that we cleared that up!
It will greatly enhance my appreciation of the strip.
(Seriously, keep up the great work!)

Already Done

Didn't Checkerboard Nightmare already do this? The punchline was different, but still.

Maybe.

CM was the king of webcomic metahumor. But Kris actually takes the time to draw his stuff.
