Data Recovery

Help Desk, by Christopher B. Wright

Comic Transcript

MARK: Phil... you look like you're actually doing work.

PHIL: Don't get too excited. I'm just doing a little spring cleaning.

MARK: Spring cleaning?

PHIL: We've got all this information archived on dis that we don't use any more, so once a year we reformat all the storage so we can use it again.

MARK: Aren't you worried about formatting over something important?

PHIL: Mark, these disks have been sitting in an old storage closet for almost a year. If there were important data stored on them, someone would have asked for them by now.

ALICE: Hey Phil, we're trying to find some disks containing extremely important financial data that we secured in the old storage closet across the hall from our office. Do you know where they went?

PHIL: I've really got to stop setting myself up for things like that.

Comments

Just making sure this works...

... and it seems to.

Eventually anonymous posters will be required to solve a math captcha before they can post. At the moment it doesn't work with the Konqueror browser, however, so I've disabled that module.

This is a follow-up test.

This is a followup test from a dummy account.

... and this is an edited comment!

Wow! The new Drupal site

Wow! The new Drupal site looks amazing! Hope it will run smoothly... When I think about how far Help Desk has come since its original inception, well, it brings tears to my eyes. Kinda.

Yay!

Yay, everything is working! I just got registered with no problems.

oooooh, nifty

I was chrismur...found i had to re-register, not complaining seeing as i like the name :p

The site looks nufty, nice going. Brilliant comic too...i'm sure Alice was waiting for the right moment...

Just a quick question, when i click on a character, i get eight comics involving that character at a time at the bottom, is there any way to look at a page that is like the archive listings per character or do we search through the numbers at the bottom and be happy we even have that function? ;)

At the moment when you click

At the moment when you click on a character it lets you page through all the comics in the archives that the character appears in (unless I've mis-tagged the comics, which happens now and again). Eventually I'd like to change that, so that instead you see a list similar to the comic archives, but I haven't figured out how to link from one to the other.

Coolies

mmk, thanks for that, seriously, it's cool as it is, no rush to do anything else other than sit back and enjoy the result of all the work you've done for us :)

And post more comics, of course ;)

Edit: Oh, don't know if they've been there a while...but...the 'endorcements'... lmao

neat-o!

Wow. i'm so glad you got this whole thing running *crosses fingers*. Very cool, with the tags and all.

heh...

When i first came to the page, all i got was Monday's comic though it didn't come up (red x of doom!) so i thought 'not again'...

Then i hit control and F5 for a forced refresh and got this brilliant new page.

I've been reading this webcomic since i was at college in 2001, thanks for the laughs over six years when at times, i have needed them most, it has been great watching this place go through its changes over that time.

Editing

Where is the comment edit button? Does it only show up for a certain amount of time, or am I just not seeing it on my earlier post?

The one complaint I have is that it makes you preview your comment before posting it, even when you are logged in.

EDIT: OK, so at least it lets me edit this one right after posting. It still won't let me edit my first post from earlier.

Were you logged in when you

Were you logged in when you posted earlier? Anonymous posters can't edit their posts.

The preview thing isn't that granular, I'm afraid.

Yep, I was logged in. It was

Yep, I was logged in. It was the post in here saying that I got registered.

coolness

This is really good stuff. You've done well, Chris.

Comment on commenting -- when I enter a comment (like this one) it would probably be nice if the cursor were already sitting in the Subject box, ready for me to type.

Then, if I've set a signature, that's already sitting in the comment box, but the cursor is sitting at the end of it, so I have to cursor back to the beginning (I'd rather if the cursor were at the beginning of the signature rather than the end). Of course, if these are things you can't easily change, it's not a big deal.

But, so far it looks good.

Are you going to add more characters to your cast pages? (all of the minor characters like the Judge and the news commentator?) Can we comment on them? (or maybe we don't need to).

Perhaps we could comment on the FAQ page, to give you more questions to answer?

Are you ever going to create some Keenspot Premium content?

Gee -- I just noticed that today's strip is #1398 -- two more to 1400 strips -- Wow!

So, when *are* you going to create a new Kernal Panic and/or Old Skool Webcomic?
