MONK: You disconnected the ringer?

PHIL: Sure. It was either that or try and work out a ringer-suppressing algorithm.

PHIL: Originally, I wanted a phone queue monitor to track how long the caller had been in queue, and to suppress the phone ringer until a specific length of time had passed. Then I figured, hey, just turning off the ringer is easier, and it does pretty much the same thing.

ALEX: Yeah, except that if management reads our queue reports and learns that we didn't take any calls at all this month, they'll figure that technical support is an unnecessary expense and fire all of us.

PHIL: Oh.

PHIL: Merry Christmas?

ALEX: Turn it back on, Phil.
