Advertising Information
EvisceratiNet is currently using Project Wonderful to serve its banner ads. Project Wonderful is an "ad auction" site that allows potential advertisers to bid for adspace on websites that use the service. When a bid is accepted the ad will run on the site for an entire day, up to the number of days specified in the ad.
For more information on how advertising through Project Wonderful works, read their explanation here.
Types of ads
EvisceratiNet offers three different types of ads on its site:
- A horizontal strip of three 117x30 Button ads that appear on the top of each page on all three websites (Eviscerati.net, Ubersoft.net, and Eviscerati.org). Bids can be made on any or all of the ad buttons as desired.
- A single Leaderboard ad that appears beneath the logo of all three websites (Eviscerati.net, Ubersoft.net, and Eviscerati.org).
- A vertical strip of four 125x125 Box ads that appear in the far right column on all three websites (Eviscerati.net, Ubersoft.net, and Eviscerati.org). Bids can be made on an or all of the ad boxes as desired.
Why advertise at all?
Long-time readers know that I am not especially fond of web advertising. In fact, I would be more than happy to eschew banner advertising altogether if there was a way to pay for my hosting costs and earn some kind of income from PayPal donations and merchandising alone. Unfortunately, at least for the moment, this doesn't look like it will be possible. Project Wonderful is a unique advertising service that currently avoids many of the things that annoy me about traditional ad banner services:
- It uses a daily purchasing model instead of a model based on impressions, which makes purchasing ads simpler for advertisers and ad hosts alike.
- It uses a bidding model for ad purchasing which allows advertisers to determine the ultimate value of advertising on a website -- when a bid gets too expensive people will stop bidding.
- It gives me more control over what ads run on my site. If I need to (for example, if an ad contains embedded spyware or malicious cookies) I can remove it and even block the advertiser from ever bidding again.
This is not a perfect advertising model, but it's a far friendlier model than most of the other ad services out there.
